Dindigul: One woman was killed on the spot and two others were grievously injured when a lorry proceeding to Dindigul from Chinnalapatti knocked them down at Chinnalapatti near here on Wednesday. The deceased was Mahalakshmi (32) of Chinnalapatti. The injured Rajeshwari (70) and Kasturi (14) of Chinnalapatti were admitted to Dindigul Government Hospital. Later, Kasturi, with broken legs, was referred to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The police said that when they were returning to Chinnalapatti from Sempatti in a moped, a heavily-loaded lorry that approached a deep curve, lost control, hit the moped and ran over the riders.

After preliminary investigation, the police said that 13 tonnes of flour bags was in the lorry whose capacity was only nine tonnes. Overload was the prime reason for the accident. Many accidents took place at this spot as the road was very slippery, owing to bad condition, said local people. Lorry driver Azhagarsamy of Vazhaikkapatti was arrested.
